Timeline Studio vs monday.com
Timeline Studio vs monday.com: a timeline-first alternative
monday.com is a configurable work platform that you shape to fit almost any process. Timeline Studio does one job: project timelines for small teams. If what you mostly need is a shared Gantt chart, the difference matters.

The short version
A platform you configure, or a planner you start using
monday.com describes itself as a work platform. Its features page lists Gantt and Kanban views, automations, integrations, dashboards, docs and forms, and it offers separate products for work management, CRM, software development, campaigns and service. Teams build boards with the columns and workflows they need, which makes it very flexible. That flexibility is the main reason to choose it, especially if you want one system for many kinds of work across a larger organisation.
Timeline Studio takes the opposite approach. There are no boards to design, columns to add or workflows to set up. You start on an empty Gantt chart, add tasks right on the timeline and link what depends on what. Everything it does is about planning work over time: dependencies and the critical path, what-if simulation, workload by person, working-day scheduling and importing plans from Jira, MS Project or a spreadsheet.
monday.com may suit you better if
- You want one configurable platform for many processes, not just project plans
- You need automations and a wide range of integrations
- You want dashboards across many boards and teams
- You also need CRM or service desk tools from the same vendor
Timeline Studio may suit you better if
- The Gantt chart is the main view you plan in
- You want to start today with nothing to configure
- You want what-if simulation before changing the real plan
- You plan around custom work weeks and public holidays
Timeline first
The Gantt chart is the product, not one view of a board
In Timeline Studio you plan directly on the timeline. Drag bars to set dates, draw dependencies between tasks, and move a task to move everything after it. Group work under initiatives, epics and features, mark key dates with milestones, and switch on the critical path to see the chain of tasks that sets the finish date.
When the team wants a different view, switch the same plan to a Kanban board with To do, In progress, Blocked and Done columns, or to an outline list. There is one set of data, so nothing has to be kept in sync.
- Initiatives, epics, features, milestones, tasks and subtasks
- Dependency arrows and the critical path
- Board and List views of the same data

What-if simulation
Try a change in a sandbox, then apply it or walk away
Switch on simulation mode to drag dates, change durations and rearrange dependencies without touching the real plan. Every task that depends on the change moves with it, so you see the knock-on effect straight away. Apply the result, or exit and the plan is exactly as you left it.
- Changes stay in the sandbox until you apply them
- Dependent tasks move with every change
- Broken dependencies are flagged before you apply

Workload and working days
Workload and holidays built in, not built by you
Give each task an assignee and an allocation, and the workload panel shows a lane per person with their peak load each week, lists anyone booked over 100%, and badges their tasks on the timeline. Set a work week for each timeline, add your own holidays or national public holidays for the US, UK, Germany, France, Canada, Poland or Ukraine, and turn on “Skip days off when scheduling” so task lengths, dependency shifts and the critical path count working days only.
- An assignee and allocation on every task
- Weekly peak load and over-100% warnings
- Work weeks and one-click public holidays

Collaboration
Plan together on the same timeline
Invite people by email as editors, commenters or viewers. When others have the timeline open you see their cursors and the bars they are editing, and changes show up without a reload. Comment on any task and @mention a teammate, chat with the whole timeline or one person, and check the activity feed to see who changed what.
- Can edit, Can comment and View only roles
- Live cursors, presence and timeline chat
- A view-only public link when you need one

What Timeline Studio doesn't do
Timeline Studio is not a general work platform. It has no automations, no custom columns or fields, no dashboards across projects, no forms, and no integrations with other tools beyond importing and exporting files. It doesn't do CRM, service desk or time tracking. If your team wants to run many different processes in one configurable system, monday.com is built for that and Timeline Studio isn't.
If your team mostly needs to agree a plan, see how the pieces depend on each other and keep the dates honest, Timeline Studio gets you there with much less setup. Import a CSV file or paste rows from a spreadsheet to bring an existing plan in, and export the timeline as an image or a CSV file whenever you need it elsewhere.
